The Blue Portal - Old Town
Design
The Blue Portal is a Philanthropic Program run by the Assistance League of Albuquerque. The shop provides a venue for New Mexico senior artists and crafters to see their creations to the public, the artisans receive 100% of their asking price for each piece sold. The building was originally a home built in the late 1800s behind the San Felipe De Neri Church in Old Town Albuquerque. The structure is built of Terone, a natural building material of sod roots and dirt, cut from the banks of the Rio Grande. The building was added on to as the family grew in traditional NM style. Our team completely gutted the interior, refurbished deteriorated Terrone, replaced a dilapidated addition and replaced the roof. The building received all new HVAC, Electrical and Lighting to meet the needs of the gallery space. SLA presented two times the City of Albuquerque Landmarks Commission for approval to renovate a building on their list of historic buildings. year: 2019
